If you’re newly engaged and starting to plan your wedding, chances are you’ve already Googled “How do I choose a wedding photographer?” — and then immediately felt overwhelmed.

Totally normal.

There are a lot of talented photographers out there, a lot of opinions, and a lot of pressure to “get it right.” The good news? Choosing the right photographer doesn’t have to feel stressful — it just has to feel right.

Here are the questions I always encourage couples to ask before booking.

Why Your Wedding Photographer Matters More Than You Think

Long after the day is over — after the flowers fade and the cake is eaten — your photos are what remain. They’re the way you’ll remember how it felt, not just how it looked.

You’ll also spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than almost anyone else. So beyond talent, the experience matters just as much.

1. Do You Love Their Style — Consistently?

Instagram is a highlight reel. What really matters is whether you love a photographer’s full galleries.

Ask to see:

  • Complete wedding days

  • Different lighting situations

  • Indoor, outdoor, sunny, and overcast days

You want editing that feels timeless, consistent, and true to life — not trendy one day and outdated the next.

2. How Do They Make You Feel?

This one is big.

Do they make you feel:

  • Comfortable?

  • At ease?

  • Like yourself?

The best photos come from trust, not posing. A photographer who helps you relax will always capture better moments than someone who just knows how to direct.

3. What’s Included in Their Collections?

Before booking, make sure you understand:

  • How many hours of coverage you’re getting

  • Whether a second photographer is included

  • How many images you’ll receive

  • Delivery timeline

Transparency here saves stress later.

4. Can They Handle Real Life?

Weddings rarely go exactly as planned — and that’s okay.

Your photographer should be comfortable with:

  • Changing weather

  • Timeline shifts

  • Low light

  • Emotional or complex family dynamics

Experience matters more than perfection.

5. Do They Understand Your Kind of Wedding?

A backyard wedding, an elopement in the forest, or a relaxed outdoor celebration requires a different approach than a ballroom event.

Make sure your photographer understands:

  • Your environment

  • Your priorities

  • Your vision for the day

The right photographer will adapt to you, not the other way around.

A Few Red Flags to Watch For

  • No full galleries available

  • Extremely rigid packages

  • Pressure to book quickly

  • Little interest in your story or priorities

Trust your gut — it’s usually right.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, choose a photographer you trust. Someone who listens, understands your vision, and feels like a calming presence — not another thing to manage.

When that connection is there, everything else falls into place.
